KIRSTY GAYNARD
COSTUME INTERPRETER

01 about
I am Kirsty Gaynard a costume interpreter who gets inspired by creating costumes for both theatre and film. I enjoy working through all eras and broadening my knowledge towards costume as it is developed and altered through time. I have so far done a combination of both men's and women's wear and have greatly enjoyed both as they have tested me in different ways.

Throughout my university experience I have made a range of different costumes which cover a wide range of different era; for these I have worked from images, paintings or photograph's to recreate the desired piece which has been requested.

UNIVERSITY PROJECTS

16th Century Dress:
This piece was a self designed piece from the theme of Egyptian and traditional 16th Century gowns. For this piece I tested myself through decoration, this was through quilting, hand beading and making three dimensional aspects to fit the overall composition.

Rose Selfridge- HIGHCLIFFE CASTLE COMMISSION PIECE
This was a commission piece for Highcliffe Castle based on the Selfridges; this was a requested piece to be made from a photograph provided. From this I sourced fabrics relevant to the era and photograph and pattern drafted my own patterns to match the different components. The best experience from this was working with a client to get what they wanted from it.

'WE BURN BRIGHTLY':
For this I was making alterations which were instructed by the supervisor. This was a collaboration piece with myself and it also being sourced from the costume store. Not only did I do this collaborative piece I made some smaller makes which were needed for the show being a jabot; corset alteration and adding decoration.

Henry VIII:
I chose to make Henry VIII for my third year major project; for this I chose the most ambitious well known painting there is of Henry VIII. I recreated this piece by using luxurious fabrics and trims to give that royal appearance he would have had...I also hand made the jewellery across the costume using a mould repeated with resin, this was one of the most challenging sections to the costume. I also did a collaboration to get the embroidery details needed on the costume.

NOTE: I HAVE NOW SOLD THIS TO THE NATIONAL THEATRE
